Psychiatrist, philosopher, and writer Neel Burton, M.D. talks about the concept of “Groupthink,” in which he believes individuals can lose their sense of self and fall into conformity. He says modern society has convinced us that “…our chief source of happiness should come mostly if not exclusively from intimate relationships…” As an antidote, Burton emphasizes the value of solitude as a viable way to establish and come to know the self. He refers to a book by psychiatrist Anthony Storr, Solitude—A Return to the Self, which suggests that there is more to life than being part of a group.
