People grieving the loss of a loved one can sometimes be made to feel they have a psychiatric illness instead of being supported in a normal reaction to an event that changes every part of life. Phyllis R. Silverman, Ph.D., of Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center, believes that grief lasts longer than the two to six months sometimes mentioned as “typical.” In her research with grieving families she realized, “It takes time to find new ways to live, to reorganize lives…” Life will never be like it used to be, and Silverman says we need to find ways to integrate grief into daily living.
