The Hennepin County, Minnesota, Co-Parent Court was developed to help never-married parents work together to care for their children. Forty percent of children in the U.S. are now born to unmarried parents, which can make for some unstable family situations, especially with younger, low-income parents. NPR reports, “Parents are offered help from community agencies to find work or deal with domestic violence, addictions, or mental health problems.” They also learn about co-parenting and are helped to write parenting plans. Twenty-eight year old father, Joseph Arradondo says the Court “…gave me a chance to show I’m not a deadbeat dad.”
