Traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps patients transform their troubling emotions, and has been proven effective for people with anxiety, especially health anxiety. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) takes a different tack by helping patients come to accept their emotions. A recent study at the University of Oxford in the UK showed that MBCT was more effective in treating patients with health anxiety short-term, and that patients’ anxiety was even further reduced after one year. Study leader Freda McManus believes “the acceptance of emotions, rather than changing emotional content, allows individuals…to better cope with the fears and worries associated with their…symptoms.”
