Whether you go to marriage counseling by yourself or with your spouse, it’s important to remember that you won’t be able to change the other person, only yourself. Couples counseling is not about “fixing the other partner,” which is a common misconception. It’s about learning relationship skills, and these skills can be learned and applied very effectively even if only one spouse receives counseling. Counselors can teach us how to identify negative communication patterns and then provide us with alternative ways to interact. Even if only one spouse learns these skills in a formal setting, both spouses benefit.
