Author Mary Jo Rapino encourages early intervention for troubled relationships. According to Rapino, it takes “…seven years plus or minus two to create a divorce.” Early intervention can reverse the process. Although some spouses refuse counseling, research shows that the marriage will improve even if only one partner goes to marital therapy. Rapino suggests avoiding temporary solutions such as “alcohol, drugs, eating, withdrawing, shopping, and emotional affairs,” as these don’t address the underlying problems of a troubled marriage. She also offers five suggestions for action if your divorce date is already scheduled. Rapino urges readers to leave the marriage in an abusive situation.
