People in intimate relationships often use them as a “dumping ground” for long-standing emotional issues and insecurities, writes radio show host and author Akoshia Yoba. In harboring psychological “baggage”—the variety of internalized, unacknowledged responses to negative situations in past relationships—people are often inclined to “act out” in current ones, leading to poor choice-making and projecting aspects of personal misgivings onto their partners. This can impede constructive, healthy feedback and communication and prevent those involved from achieving optimal happiness and fulfillment in relationships. Through sincere introspection and therapy, for example, this harmful “garbage” can be dealt with, allowing an individual to treat interpersonal relationships with priority and enjoy their many rewards.
